Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
